In 2015, IND Technology developed a unique solution to help electrical networks prevent catastrophic failures, from power outages to wildfires called Early Fault Detection or EFD™. The EFD™ uses an IoT solution architecture comprising wireless sensors with edge computing capabilities.
The EFD™ system is a preventative maintenance technology that remotely detects and locates radio frequency (RF) signals emitted by incipient energy asset faults, i.e. situations likely to develop into permanent faults or wildfire if left remedied. EFD™ works independently of the mains-frequency operation of the power system and finds emerging low-current faults just as well as it finds high-current ones.

PROBLEM
For the benefits of their proactive maintenance solution to work, it needed continuous monitoring. But, their customers’ networks covered thousands of kilometres of transmission lines.
They approached DB Gurus to take their solution to the next level. They needed a scalable platform that could help customers continuously monitor their networks, cost effectively—a platform that would alert power network operators to faults detected, quickly.
When they approached us in 2016, we were really impressed with the innovative solution they’d developed. In the aftermath of recent bushfires in Australia, some caused by powerline faults, we quickly understood the benefits their technology could bring and were really keen to help them build out a scalable platform that could help power networks avoid potentially catastrophic failures in the future.
They platform needed to facilitate the collection, transformation, analysis and delivery of large volume of data from widespread IoT devices.

SOLUTION
We created a custom big data, cloud-based real-time solution to:

  • Collect data from the units in the field via a Rest API.
  • Transform the data ready for analysis
  • Analyse the data and raise alerts
  • Deliver the data to the business via an online portal.

BENEFIT
Continuous monitoring is now achieved cost-effectively.

We created a platform that is used by IND Technology’s customers called the EFD Portal. The portal was built in a way that allowed seamless integration with Tableau, a graphical reporting platform.

The platform allows IND data analysts to provide real time fault prevention for some of the largest power networks in the world.

Executives through to chief engineers for some on the largest power networks in the world can now assess critical data, quickly, to get a snaps hot of asset performance.

We are now helping IND Technology transition their platform to a server-less environment as they roll out solutions in more and more countries.

The ease of use of their monitoring platform and ability to rapidly deploy their IoT Sensors means that today, IND Technology is enabling the transition from reactive to proactive maintenance powered by EFD™ continuous monitoring globally, for power networks, railways, mines and utilities, leaving a legacy of better and more resilient energy networks.
