Case Study
The Environmental Monitoring Database became a central platform for environmental data management across Glencore’s Australian coal operations.
The solution delivered:
- A single source of truth for environmental monitoring data across 19 sites
- Improved visibility of environmental performance and compliance obligations
- Faster access to monitoring records and historical data
- Reduced administrative effort through automated data imports and reporting processes
- Consistent data management practices across multiple operations
- A scalable platform that continues to support changing business and regulatory requirements

Project Brief
Glencore required a reliable database solution to support their environmental compliance across numerous coal mines in New South Wales initially. Then a few years later, following the success of the NSW sites they extended it out to include Queensland. The system needed to manage hundreds of different types of environmental monitoring data, across multiple sites, while remaining easy for internal staff and external contractors to use.
The Solution
DB Gurus worked closely with Glencore to design and implement a centralised “Environmental Monitoring Database” capable of supporting environmental monitoring and compliance activities across 19 mine sites throughout New South Wales and Queensland.
The platform was designed to bring together environmental data from multiple sources into a single, secure and accessible system. Automated laboratory imports, structured data capture processes and built-in validation rules help ensure environmental monitoring data is complete, consistent and readily available for reporting and analysis.
The solution provides environmental teams with a single source of truth for monitoring data, reducing the effort required to collect information from multiple spreadsheets, reports and systems. Users can quickly access current and historical data, investigate trends, generate reports and support regulatory reporting requirements.
As business and regulatory requirements have evolved, the platform has continued to be enhanced, providing Glencore with a scalable foundation for environmental data management across its operations.
The Results
DB Gurus designed and implemented a customised database solution for Glencore that streamlined the management of environmental, compliance, and operational data. The system centralised information from multiple processes into a single platform, improving data accuracy, accessibility, and reporting efficiency.
By automating key workflows and providing clear visibility of critical information, the solution enabled more informed decision-making and supported ongoing operational and compliance requirements.
Why It Matters
For mining organisations, environmental monitoring data is critical for compliance, operational decision-making and stakeholder reporting.
By centralising environmental data into a single platform, Glencore gained greater confidence in the quality, accessibility and consistency of information used to support environmental management activities across its operations.
DB Gurus has continued to support and enhance the platform for many years, helping ensure it evolves alongside changing operational and regulatory requirements.

“Though there are many advanced features in the Environmental Monitoring Database including account switching, data visualisation, wind roses, predictive charting and mapping; it remains a very simple system for the staff to use and requires little or no training and a standard experience across all sites.”
