Summary
Australia's environmental compliance landscape is changing. With new reporting requirements and National Environmental Standards taking effect, organisations need reliable, structured environmental data behind their compliance reporting.
October is a crunch month for Australian environmental compliance.
The NGER reporting deadline falls on 31 October. Mandatory climate-related financial disclosures under AASB S2 are now being phased in, with the first reporting cohort subject to the requirements for financial years commencing on or after 1 January 2025 and Group 2 for financial years commencing on or after 1 July 2026.
At the same time, major changes to Australia’s federal environmental laws are taking effect. The National Environmental Protection Agency commenced on 1 July 2026, four National Environmental Standards were made in August, and the remaining environmental law reforms are due to commence on or before 1 December 2026.
For organisations managing significant volumes of environmental data, this creates a simple question:
Is your environmental data infrastructure ready?
Why This Reporting Season Is Different
Australia’s environmental reporting landscape has changed significantly in 2026.
The National Environmental Protection Agency commenced on 1 July 2026 as Australia’s new independent environmental regulator. Environment Information Australia was also established from 1 July, with responsibility for bringing together environmental data and information from across Australia.
Four National Environmental Standards were subsequently made on 19 August 2026, including a new Data and Information Standard. These standards will apply to project assessments and approval decisions when the new approval tests commence, on or before 1 December 2026.
At the same time, mandatory climate-related financial disclosures under AASB S2 are being phased in across Australian businesses and financial institutions. Group 1 applies to financial years commencing on or after 1 January 2025, while Group 2 applies from financial years commencing on or after 1 July 2026.
The common factor across these changes is data.
